Preparing for Your Child’s First Dance Class
Starting something new is a big moment, and for little ones, a first dance class can feel exciting, unfamiliar, and even a little overwhelming. That is completely normal.
At Small Fry Dance Club, we work hard to make that first experience feel warm, welcoming, and positive for both dancers and parents. Whether your child jumps right in or needs a little time to settle, our goal is to help them feel successful from the very beginning.
Below are a few simple ways to help set your dancer up for a great first class.
Before Class
Come fed and rested
A snack beforehand and a little rest can go a long way. Young dancers tend to do best when they arrive with full energy and ready to participate.
Talk about what class will be like
Let your child know what to expect before you arrive. If it is a parent participation class, tell them you will be in class with them. If it is one of our independent classes, let them know their teacher will take great care of them and that you will be nearby.
Arrive a few minutes early
We recommend arriving about 5–10 minutes before class starts. That gives you enough time to park, use the restroom, and get settled without making the wait feel too long for your dancer.
Use the restroom before class
A quick bathroom stop before class can make the experience smoother for everyone and help your child stay focused once class begins.
A friend can help
For some children, starting with a buddy makes all the difference. If you have a friend interested in class too, joining together can help your dancer feel even more comfortable.
During Class
Bring a water bottle
It is always a good idea to send your dancer in with water.
Dress for movement
Comfort matters most. Choose clothing your child can move in easily. For our preschool-age classes, comfort is more important than a strict dress code.
Check on footwear if needed
Because our curriculum rotates through different styles, the recommended shoes may vary. If you are unsure what your child should wear, our staff can point you in the right direction.
Give it time
Some children walk in confidently on day one. Others need a few classes to feel fully comfortable. Both are normal. The first class is just the beginning.
Lobby and viewing expectations
Families are welcome to wait in our lobby and watch from the viewing windows when appropriate. If siblings are with you, quiet activities are always helpful so the space stays calm and welcoming for everyone.
After Class
Ask your dancer about their experience
Instead of only asking, “Did you like it?” try asking what their favorite part was. You may learn a lot from the little details they share.
Check in with the teacher when needed
Our teachers are always happy to help, though there may be times they need to transition quickly into the next class. If you ever want more feedback, reaching out afterward is a great option.
Remember that consistency matters
Especially for preschool-age dancers, regular attendance makes a big difference. Familiar routines help children build comfort, confidence, and independence in the classroom.
Watch their interests grow
As your child experiences different styles, you may start to notice what they connect with most. That is one of the fun parts of the journey.
A Few Reassuring Things to Keep in Mind
It is completely normal for a child to be shy at first.
It is normal if they need time to warm up.
It is normal if one week goes better than the next.
Starting dance is a process, and growth often happens a little at a time. Our team is here to support that process and help your child build confidence along the way.
